Another game, another two home runs.
LSU’s Jake Brown continued his assault on opposing pitching Monday as the junior from Sulphur blasted two more home runs – neither cheap — and the Tigers stayed unbeaten on the young season with a 10-7 victory over Kent State.
It was Brown’s second straight game with two homers and, at one point, gave him four in a span of six at-bats.
“It’s hard to say anybody in the country is off to a better start than him,” LSU coach Jay Johnson said.
Brown added a single while going 3-for-4 and raising his average to .529.
LSU had four home runs for the night as first baseman Zach Yorke hit his second of the year while going 3-for-4 and freshman Mason Braun got the first of his career.
Brown’s first home run started the scoring for the Tigers in the second inning and fellow Lake Area product Gavin Guidry closed the deal with 2 1/3 scoreless innings to finish the game.
“We really like our bullpen and the offense scoring early really helped,” Johnson said.
Guidry, the former Barbe star who missed all of last season with an injury, had his second straight impressive performance when he was summoned after Kent State closed the gap to three runs with two outs in the seventh.
Guidry was perfect, retiring all seven Milwaukee batters he faced, five by strike out, to pick up his first save. He got the victory in last Saturday’s win over Milwaukee.
“I feel like Gavin is the best closer in the country,” Johnson said. “What’s remarkable is that we won the national championship last season while he was out with an injury. We’re very grateful he’s back on the mound, obviously.”
Jaden Nook pitched the first three innings and gave up three runs, all in his final inning. Ehan Plog (1-0) pitched the fourth and was credited with the win.
“It was one of he best wins of the early season in college baseball,” Johnson said. “We’re happy to get through these four game with four wins. I was really pleased with the team tonight. I really think that offensively we were very good.”
It was Kent State’s first loss of the season after taking three games at Southeastern Louisiana before coming to LSU.
