According to complete but unofficial election results from the Secretary of State, Broussard defeated former Jeff Davis Parish sheriff Ivy Woods (NOPTY), in Saturday’s election.
Broussard received 3,621 votes, or 67 percent, while Woods drew 1,687 votes, or 31 percent. A third candidate, Coy G. Myers, got 90 votes, or 2 percent. Although Myers withdrew shortly after qualifying due to health reasons, his name remained on the ballot because he missed the state’s withdrawal deadline.
Voter turnout was 19 percent in both parishes with 5,398 voters going to the polls.
During a recent political forum, Broussard emphasized his professional background stating, “…Having been in business for 30 years, I have seen firsthand the struggles our communities face. Throughout my career, I have managed budgets, made tough decisions, and consistently kept my word. I believe Baton Rouge needs this type of business-minded approach to leadership.”
Broussard identified himself as a strong advocate for the education system, citing it as the primary driving force for the economy and for retaining young residents. He also listed infrastructure improvements and carbon capture and storage projects among his top priorities, while expressing concerns regarding the potential risks the projects may pose to drinking water.
“By maintaining a low crime rate and a great school system, we can better attract new businesses to our area.” he said. “Furthermore, I am committed to ensuring our law enforcement and fire departments have the essential equipment and tools they need to keep us safe.”
The seat became vacant in late 2024 following the resignation of Troy Romero, who was appointed as the state director for Rural Development in Louisiana.
The election was the only item on the ballot in Southwest Louisiana.
