Leesville Police Chief Amanda Westmoreland recognized three members of her department during Tuesday’s City Council meeting for their outstanding service and dedication to the community.
Those recognized were PFC Devin Buterbaugh, PFC Tyler Hardwick and Police Officer Caleb Phillips. Westmoreland said each of them stepped in during a time of emergency and helped others in urgent situations.
Westmoreland also recognized records clerk Judy Horton as someone who has gone above and beyond and continues to do so after many years working with the department.
“I have seen her give to those less fortunate, and I have listened as she offered advice and support to people who were hurting,” Westmoreland said. “Heroes come in many different forms and she is truly one of them.
Mayor Rick Allen said acts of service do not go unnoticed and thanked each of them for their service.
“We do recognize your sacrifice and what you bring to the table and we are extremely, extremely proud of each and everyone of you. Thank you for your service,” Allen said.
During the meeting the council also introduced an ordinance amending the city’s code of ordinances related to drinking alcoholic beverages on streets, sidewalks and other public-owned properties. The public hearing is set for Feb. 9. If passed, the ordinance will allow the council to make decisions per event, prior to the event, in order to allow alcohol to be served at
public-owned properties.
“This ordinance will not eliminate the no-alcohol-on-premises throughout the city of Leesville, what this change in the ordinance will do is allow the council to make a decision per event, every event, that is going to happen at any city property where they will have alcohol will have to come before the council for approval,” Allen said.
If passed, this is a modification to the ordinance, this is not an elimination of the ordinance, he said.
The council also passed a resolution to authorize advertisement for bids to install four pickleball courts, including fencing, at the recreation complex. The council also passed a resolution to authorize the city to engage with Core Distinction Group to provide a hotel and restaurant feasibility study.
Allen said the city has never had a hotel study done; the last study in 2014 for was solely for a restaurant.
At the end of the meeting the council thanked the first responders for taking care of the community during the winter storm and acknowledged the cold temperatures that will remain throughout this weekend asking neighbors and friends to look out for one another. The council will meet again at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9.
