Sophomore Ty Pousson scored twice in the first half, and St. Louis Catholic won its sixth consecutive game on Tuesday, beating rival Barbe 3-0 at Cowgirl Field.

Drake Hinton assisted on both of Pousson’s goals. The first was on a long pass from the left sideline to the middle of the field, where Pousson beat the defense to the ball and knocked it in. On the second goal, Hinton again passed the ball from left to right, and Pousson put it in the left side of the goal.

“Any time you have a rivalry game, I feel like both teams are going to come out strong,” St. Louis head coach Zach Malik said after the Saints avenged a 4-0 loss to the Bucs earlier in the season. “But I felt like our boys stayed composed, which we were missing last time. All credit to the boys. I thought we were moving the ball pretty well.”

St. Louis Catholic (14-4) goalkeeper Nick Jackson, a sophomore, made four saves in the first 18 minutes of the second half to repel the Bucs’ (12-7-4) pressure. St. Louis shutout an opponent 10th time this season and for the fifth consecutive game. Jackson has allowed five goals in the last 11 games.

We had some shaky moments when they were pressing us pretty well,” Malik said. “But once we started to break the press and started to calm down, I thought the composure of the boys was tremendous.

“He (Jackson) has great hands. We have had great keeper competition over the past couple of years. Credit to him. Over the season, he has just gotten better and better. He has been able to not just perry them wide, but has been able to actually catch and hold on to it, which takes away a lot of chances for offense.”

Possibly the Bucs’ best scoring opportunity in the second half was shot by Kenneth Jackson in the 44th minute, but Jackson was able to get just enough on the ball to deflect it, and stopped a shot by Parker LaCombe two minutes later.

Senior Tucker Williams scored the Saints’ third goal in the 71st minute on a cross from the left side by sophomore Griffin Hanks.

The Saints, ranked No. 3 in the Division III power rankings, have two more regular season games left against Sulphur at home on Friday and at Lafayette on Monday.
