A 64-year-old bicyclist has died after being struck Saturday night by a vehicle in the 2100 block of Broad Street.
Lake Charles Police Sgt. Brad Puckett said officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run crash involving an automobile and a bicyclist just before 8:30 p.m.
“Once officers arrived, they found a male suffering from multiple broken bones and rendered aid until Acadian Ambulance arrived,” Puckett said. “Officer also located parts of the suspect vehicle on scene.”
Puckett said the bicyclist — later identified as Jay Borom — was transported to a local hospital for treatment and later transported to a Baton Rouge hospital due to the severity of his injuries.
Puckett said the suspect driver, 20-year-old Mathew Alan Vipond, called the department to report he was involved in the crash. Vipond was arrested for first-degree vehicular negligent injuring, hit-and-run driving with death or serious bodily injuring, and underage operating vehicle while intoxicated.
On Sunday, Lake Charles Police were notified Borom died from his injuries.
The crash is still under investigation by the Lake Charles Police Department Traffic division at this time. Those with more information pertaining to this crash, call 337-491-1311 or anonymously leave a tip on the Lake Charles PD app.
