Weather delays Cowgirls

The Cowgirls will have to wait if they are to win their fourth straight Southland Conference regular-season softball championship.

Instead of opening its final three-game series of the year on Friday as originally scheduled, the series at Stephen F. Austin will begin on Saturday due to weather concerns.

“It is just more adversity this team will have to deal with,” said McNeese State head softball coach James Landreneau.

The Cowgirls (34-18, 20-4) enter the final weekend already knowing they will open SLC postseason play at home as one of two teams hosting a first-round pod starting next Thursday at Joe Miller Field.

However, McNeese is looking for more. The Cowgirls are tied with Southeastern for first place and hold the tiebreaker over the Lady Lions, having won their series 2-1 in Hammond earlier this season.

Southeastern begins a three-game series against Nicholls with a doubleheader on Friday night and concludes with a final game on Saturday. That means McNeese will know what it has to do almost before taking the field.

“We will talk about that, but we have to take care of our business,” said Landreneau. “We want to play clean softball and then take our chances.”

McNeese has won seven of the last 10 Southland titles and is 96-21 in conference games since 2021.

The Cowgirls will now play two games Saturday, starting at noon and finishing on Sunday.
