Kye Hanks put together a dream-like round Wednesday to win individual medalist honors and led St. Louis Catholic to the Division II, District 2 team title on Wednesday at Lake Charles Country Club.
“I started off pretty hot,” Hanks said. “I was 3 under through four and just kept it rolling all day.”
Hanks shot a 9-under 63, a career low for the junior with 10 birdies on the par-72 course that was playing at 6,507 yards.
The Saints shot 300 to beat postseason nemesis Teurlings Catholic by 16 strokes to win their fifth consecutive district title.
“It feels good,” Hanks said. “It gives us some confidence going into regionals and state.
“For state, we have to go to their home course, but if we keep playing like this, we should be good.”
The regional tournament is on Wednesday at Oak Wing in Alexandria. The top four teams and top four individuals qualified for the regional tournament.
Hanks said his putting was his strength on Wednesday. He missed one putt inside 10 feet on the 18th hole for a would-be eagle that would have dropped him to 10 under.
“I was putting very well,” Hanks said. “I really did not miss at all.
“It was pretty cool. That was really the only putt inside 10 feet that I missed all day. It was a little lack of concentration at the end.”
He made the turn at 4 under and quickly dropped to 7 under with three consecutive birdies to open the back nine.
His lone bogey was on the par-4 fifth hole, but it didn’t shake him.
“It was early in the round,” Hanks said. “I was already 3 under and I went back to 3 under.
“I knew that I could keep it rolling and don’t get too upset over one bogey.”
Samuel Broussard, Kane Hanks and Evan Comeaux shot 79s to give the Saints four golfers in the top five.
Teurlings’ Spencer Hagan was the individual runner-up, 12 shots behind Hanks, while teammate Brewer Cain was third at 78.
