MOSS BLUFF – It all came down to the final event, but the Barbe girls track and field team finally ended Lafayette’s nine-season win streak at the District 3-5A meet on Thursday at Sam Houston High School.

Barbe edged Lafayette 192-186 to win its first district championship since 2014. The boys team gave the Bucs a sweep of the team titles as they breezed to the title with 158 points, while Sulphur was second with 96 points.

“They did everything that they could have done today,” Barbe girls head coach Priscilla Ibarra said. “I think everyone showed up.

“Whether they qualified or not, they gave it their all. They stepped up in places that we didn’t expect to, and that really helped us to get this team title.”

No matter the place, Barbe needed to finish ahead of Lafayette in the 4×400-meter relay. They had a solid lead early, but the Lions caught up 200 meters into the third leg. But Aniyah Lavan put the Bucs back on top before the final exchange and Kennedi Burks, the top 400 runner in the state, closed out the team title as she crossed the line in 3:50.38.

“Aniyah (Lavan) had a long day,” Ibarra said. “She did the jumping events and the 4×200.

“She kind of got out a little slow, but she definitely made up for it on the second half. Her gears were rolling at that point. Our 4×400 has been really consistent. We have three seniors and a junior, so I know they really want to give it their all.”

Barbe led Lafayette by 20 points, 172-152, after Camille Rembert’s second-place (2:20.37) finish in the 800-meter run. But the lead dwindled to four points after Lafayette’s Addison Aucoin (13:04.24) and Lillian Giroir (13:05.18) went 1-2 in the 3200 run.

Just as Ibarra predicted, the Bucs got big points – 92 points in 7 events –  in the field events led by Lavan, Kaci Fulton and Taylor Bennett. Fulton won the shot put (40-2) and discus (118-3), and Bennett took the district title in the high jump (5-4) and placed third in the long jump (15-11). Lavan won the long jump with a distance of 18-4 and was second in the high jump (5-4). Freshman Maria Lafleur won the javelin with a 132-8 ½.

“We have strong field events on the shot and discus side,” Ibarra said. “We always have people who are really strong there, but it wasn’t a given.

“It was kind of split where we had someone who could place first and some who could be third or fourth. They did exactly that.

The Barbe boys got 18 points from field athlete Travis Miller, who won the shot put (45-5) and was second in the discus (135-10) and won the 4×400 (3:30.34) and 4×800 (8:14.75) relays.

Other district champs for the Barbe boys included Lee Forsyth (discus, 137-3 ½), Luke Leger (javelin, 184-0), Tyler Joseph (long jump, 20-11 ¼), Carter Hooks (pole vault, 15-0) and Lane Jessup in the 800 (2:01.62).

Sulphur’s Tracy Washington won the 400 in 49.74 seconds, was the runner-up in the 200 (22.13) and third in the 100 (10.81).

The top four in each event qualified for the Region 1-5A meet on April 30 at Northwestern State University.
