The Westlake High Theatre group is bringing the story of Tarzan to the stage at 7 p.m. tonight at the school, 1000 Garden Drive.

The group will perform the full-length, 90-minute Broadway musical production of “Tarzan.” Based on Disney’s 1999 animated film of the same name, “Tarzan” tells the story of a baby orphaned after a shipwreck on the West African Coast. He (portrayed by Kaden Hasty) was taken in by a troop of gorillas and raised in the jungle. Decades later, he encounters a botanist from London named Jane (Lela Reinking), altering the trajectory of both their lives.

Theater-goers will be treated to famous Phil Collins tracks like “Two Worlds,” “Sons of Man,” and “You’ll Be In My Heart,” a song that won a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best original song, as well as other musical tracks like “Sure As The Sun Turns To Moon” and “No Other Way.”

Westlake Director of Theatre Kerry Onxley said he seeks out productions that leverage performers’ acting, dancing, vocal and visual arts skills, and productions that challenge them. The 15 actors and technical students engaged in the production will be more “industry-ready” with a full Broadway production under their belt. Onxley said support for high school theater is paramount. Theater benefits students’ “personal and academic development, fostering creativity, confidence and teamwork skills,” with students who participate scoring higher on standardized tests, he said.

It is also a space for students to connect with one another, he explained. As is the journey of finding self-identity. This is the fundamental theme of “Tarzan.”

“Tarzan’s journey is centered around his struggle to understand where he fits in the world. Raised by apes, he grapples with his human nature and his desire to connect with his own kind,” he explained.

“The mother ape helps Tarzan understand that we all have hearts which makes us all the same That’s the same with life. We are all the same inside, so it doesn’t matter what’s on the outside.”

Tickets are $10 at the door.
