The honors keep coming for the Cowboys after their historic basketball run.
Guard Javohn Garcia and former head coach Will Wade were named the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches (LABC) Major College Player of the Year and Major College Coach of the Year, the organization announced this week.
The McNeese State duo, who helped lead the Cowboys to a 28-7 season, will be given their awards at the LABC banquet on May 3.
The Cowboys finished 19-1 in the Southland Conference, winning back-to-back regular season and postseason tournament titles for the first time in program history. They also won the school’s first NCAA game, upsetting Clemson 69-67 in the opening round of the Midwest Regional.
For that, the two earned their honors. Over the last two years together, Garcia and Wade led McNeese to a 58-11 record, including going 40-2 against Southland opponents.
Garcia, who announced last month he would return to McNeese and play for new head coach Bill Armstrong next fall as a graduate student, was earlier named the SLC Player of the Year. He was also the MVP of the postseason tournament.
“He was the most consistent player in the league all year,” said Wade. “He made a lot of big plays for us, and we put the ball in his hands in big moments down the stretch of games.”
Garcia has also been named a finalist for the Lou Henson Award as the Mid-Major Player of the Year and second team NABC All-Gulf District honors. He led the Cowboys in scoring with a 12.6 average and with 54 total steals, was second with 68 assists, and turned the ball over just 32 times in 1,012 minutes played.
Garcia scored in double digits 24 times while starting in all 35 games, scoring 20 points or more six times.
Wade, who is now the head coach at North Carolina State after leading McNeese the last two years, was named the SLC Coach of the Year for the second time in March. He was named a finalist for the Hugh Durham Award as the nation’s top coach in the mid-major ranks.
