MOSS BLUFF – St. Amant’s lead was short-lived Thursday afternoon as Sam Houston rallied to win 10-4 and sweep the Non-select Division I bi-district best-of-three playoff series.
The No. 11 Broncos (29-7) will travel to No. 6 and defending state champion West Monroe next week in the regional round. The Rebels (26-7) knocked Sam Houston out of the playoffs last season in the semifinals 7-1.
St. Amant’s (19-17) Jace Moody hit a two-out three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Sam Houston stormed back with four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Cole Flanagan hit a RBI double to tie the game, and Ashton Bultron’s single to left field scored Kolton Miller for the go-ahead run. Connor Walker added an RBI triple, and Owen Gallery drove in a run on a single to left field.
The Gators threatened to cut the Broncos’ 7-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, loading the bases on two hits and a walk with one out. But Flanagan quickly closed the door with back-to-back strikeouts. Flanagan earned the win with seven strikeouts and two walks over five innings. He allowed four runs on four hits.
Sam Houston out-hit St. Amant 15-4, led by Haden Peshoff. He went 3 for 4 and hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning. Bultron went 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.
Tucker Miller took the loss for the Gators after allowing five earned runs on nine hits in four and one-third innings.
In game one on Wednesday, Owen Galley pitched a complete game two-hitter to lead Sam Houston to a 6-2 win. Galley allowed two earned runs with six strikeouts and two walks.
The Broncos never trailed after scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning on Wallker’s RBI double, Charlie Donaldson’s sacrifice fly and Wyatt Harvey’s RBI single.
