Larry Johnson made it official Monday by signing to transfer from Creighton to McNeese State.

Johnson is the third former 4-star recruit to join the Cowboys since Bill Armstrong took over as head coach from Will Wade at the end of last season. 

Johnson is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound redshirt freshman with four years of eligibility remaining. Coming out of high school in 2024, he chose Creighton over other national-brand schools, including Illinois, Missouri, and Mississippi State. 

“Larry is an exceptionally talented guard with elite athleticism and the ability to score all all three levels,” said Armstrong. “He’s a high-level finisher with the rare ability to convert with either hand through contact.”

Johnson took a redshirt last season at Creighton.

In high school, he was known as a standout defensive player who was more of a slasher than an offensive end. He is said to have worked hard on his long-range shooting while at Creighton. 

“He is a dynamic athlete and impactful defender and will bring energy on both ends of the floor,” said Armstrong.

Johnson played his senior season at Southern California Academy.

“Larry has tremendous upside,” his high school coach at Southern California Academy, Julius Von Hanzlik, said last year. “His athleticism is electric. He has Zion Williamson-like explosiveness. He’s a tenacious defender—just a dog. “

Offensively, he puts pressure on the rim and can play through contact and finish above the rim. He does a good job making the right reads off the dribble. True scorer and playmaker.” 

Johnson joins two former four-star recruits and transfers who have signed with the Cowboys: 6-7 forward Jacolb Fredson-Cole from Oklahoma and 6-10 forward Jerrell Colbert out of SMU.

Johnson’s addition gives McNeese seven players on scholarship with six more spots to fill. The Cowboys are still expected to be after at least two more big men and another point guard.
