Jerrell Colbert made it official Tuesday night that he will be a Cowboy next season.
The 6-foot-10, 235-pound forward followed his verbal commitment last week to join McNeese State by signing with the Cowboys and new head coach Bill Armstrong.
“Adding Jerrell to our roster ensures we can play the game the way we envision,” said Armstrong. “He embodies everything we value in a post player—a rare combination of athleticism, length, and speed that will have an immediate impact on both ends of the floor.
“As a true rim protector, he’ll elevate our defense and enhance our pressure schemes. Offensively, his speed is a major asset, enabling us to consistently attack in transition and keep pressure on the rim.”
Colbert comes over from SMU, where he played in 33 of the Mustangs’ 35 games last season. He averaged 2.5 points and 1.8 rebounds while shooting 63.6% from the floor and had a season-high 13 points against Boston College.
At Kansas State, the year before, he started the last 13 games.
Colbert becomes the second player to sign with the Cowboys. Last week, 6-7 forward Jacolb Cole, who played for Armstrong at Link Academy while in high school, signed with McNeese.
Cole will transfer from Oklahoma, as Armstrong continues to rebuild after replacing his friend Will Wade just two weeks ago.
Wednesday, Jerome Brewer announced on social media he had committed to LaSalle after spending one season at McNeese. Brewer was injured and redshirted this season with the Cowboys after coming over from East Texas A&M (formerly Texas A&M-Commerce).
The 6-9 Brewer averaged 13.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in 19 games for the Lions two years ago. His season was cut short that year with an ankle injury.
Two other former players, guards Quadir Copeland and Ayln Breed, have already committed to play next season with Wade at North Carolina State.
The Cowboys now have six scholarship players on their roster and seven openings. Four players elected to stay from last year’s club, while four more were out of eligibility.
Two of those returning, DJ Richards and Javohn Garcia, were starters.
Armstrong said his first priority was rebuilding the front line, which lost starting forwards Christian Shumate and Joe Charles to graduation. Key bench player and part-time starter Brandon Murray is also out of eligibility.
Brant Selebange and swingman Sincere Parker are in the transfer porta
