The Lake Charles College Prep boys track and field team made an impressive showing last week at the Tabasco Relays at New Iberia High School.

Competing against some of the top teams in the state, the Trailblazers finished second and unofficially set four of the top marks in Class 3A this high school track and field season. They lead the class in seven of 19 events, according to la.milesplit.com.

Sophomore sprinter Ayden Carter led the way for the Trailblazers by winning the 100- (10.64) and 200-meter dashes (21.29), and leads Class 3A in both events. He also ran a leg on the winning 4×100 relay team (41.85) along with Kai Fontenot, Braylen White and Derrick White.

Cameron Brazzle’s third-place triple jump of 45 feet, 3 inches, put him in the lead in Class 3A.

LCCP was the 3A state runner-up last year. It will be one of the top contenders in May at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state championship in Baton Rouge.

20-game win streaks

The Barbe baseball team and Sam Houston softball team are showing no signs of slowing down as they enter the last full week of the regular season.

Both teams have built 20-game win streaks.

The Bucs, who have jumped to No. 2 in the Non-select Division I power ratings in the last week, wrapped up the District 3-5A championship Sunday with a 5-1 win over Sulphur. Jairus Miller (10-0) pitched a complete game two-hitter with 13 strikeouts and four walks.

Sam Houston sealed the District 3-5A softball championship last week and kept slugging home runs, adding seven more to bring their season total to 48. Three players — Aubrey Portie (12), Layla Landry (11) and Carolina Eidson (11) — have more than 10 home runs for the No. 1 Broncos.

Saints on the links

The St. Louis Catholic boys golf team won its fourth tournament in six outings after claiming the team title at the Golden Tor Invitational on Saturday at Frasch Park Golf Course.

Kye Hanks won top medalist for the second time this season with a 1-over par 72 at the par-71 course. He beat Sulphur’s Drake German by one stroke.

The Saints shot 307, while Sulphur was the runner-up at 327.

Look ahead

The Grand Lake baseball team can wrap up its first District 4-1A championship since 2022 with a win today at Merryville (9-7, 1-3).

The Hornets (18-5, 4-0) have won 10 consecutive games. The pitching staff didn’t give up an earned run in three games last week.
