The St. Louis Catholic girls track team dominated at the state level over the last few seasons.
Strong relay teams have been major players in the Saints’ six indoor and outdoor state championships since 2020, and they are dominating in those events again this season.
“The girls are fabulous,” St. Louis track and field head coach Johnny Giordano said. “I mean, fabulous.”
The Saints own the top times in Class 3A in the 4×100 (48.15 seconds), 4×200 (1:41.18), and 4×400-meter (3:49.94) relay, as ranked by la.milesplit.com. Even against the entire state, the Saints’ times still hold up.
They have the top 4×200 team in the state, No. 2 in the 4×400 behind Barbe and No. 4 in the 4×100.
“I surely didn’t think from a relay perspective we would be this good,” Giordano said. “I mean, we’ve never been
good at the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400, all three, in the same year. It’s very exciting. It’s fun for the kids.’’
St. Louis has won 18 gold medals in the relay events at state since 2020 and set the Division II indoor 4×200 (1:42.71) and 4×400 (3:55.99) records in February. At the core of the relay group is a trio of seniors, Hannah Boullion, Sophia Bergen and Halee Jackson.
Boullion, who is headed to Louisiana-Lafayette next season, is one of the state’s elite sprinters. She is ranked No. 2 in the 400 (54.5) behind Barbe’s Kennedi Burks (53.5) and No. 3 in the 200 (24.48). She set the Class 3A 400 outdoor record (54.87) last season and set the indoor record (55.9) in February.
“The other girls on our team are better because Hannah Bouillon is very good,” Giordano said. “She’s helped encourage and inspire them to be better; we’ve had some really good kids. That’s how you end up building a team.
“You get a couple of really juggernaut-type kids, so to speak, and they inspire the other kids to be better.”
Jackson is committed to Northwestern State and was on both Saints’ record-setting indoor relays teams in February.
“That child has been fabulous for us. I mean, one of the most versatile that’s ever come through our area,” Giordano said. “She can run everything from 60 meters to 800 meters.
“She’s worked hard. Her versatility is what got her signed.”
Besides the 4×100 and 4×400 relays, Bergen also competes in the hurdles and is ranked No. 7 in Class 3A in the 300 hurdles (48.97).
“She has filled in every gap imaginable,” Giordano said. “She’s done a great job in the hurdles.
“She’s run on virtually all the relays. She was on many of those record-setting teams. She’s she’ll go down as one of the most improved in one year. She just rededicated herself and really went all in on the training and fitness and all of the things that come into being great.”
