Guinn re-elected Jennings mayor, two council members lose seats

Jennings voters re-elected Henry Guinn to a third term as the city’s mayor Saturday, while unseating two councilmen and setting up a May 3 runoff election for a third council seat.

Voters in Lacassine and Woodlawn also approved a maintenance tax for drainage.

According to complete, but unofficial results from the Secretary of State, Guinn won with 1,065 votes, or 52 percent. Challengers Melvin J. Adams received 817 votes, or 40 percent; and Christopher “Chris” Carrier received 157 votes, or 8 percent.

Voter turnout for the mayor’s race was 37 percent.

A runoff election is scheduled for Mary 3 in Jennings City Council District A between Elisha Neal Duhon and incumbent Carolyn King Simon. Duhon received 153 votes, or 35 percent, while Simon received 198 votes, or 45 percent. The third challenger, Marcus Davis, drew 88 votes, or 20 percent.

In District B Wayne Ledbetter unseated incumbent William J. “Johnny” Armentor with 196 votes, or 54 percent, of the vote. Armentor garnered 167 votes, or 46 percent.

In District C Carl P. Benoit unseated incumbent Clifton LeJeune with 303 votes, or 64 percent, to LeJeune’s 171 votes, or 36 percent.

District D saw the re-election of incumbent Councilman Anthony LeBlanc Jr. who received 174 votes, or 69 percent. Challenger Ray Touchet got 77 votes, or 31 percent.

Voters in the Lacassine and Woodlawn area renewed a property tax for maintenance, construction and improvements of the Gravity Drainage District 6.

The 10-year, 5.73 mill tax passed with 175 in favor and 86 against, or with 67 percent in favor with a 15 percent voter turnout. The millage is expected to generate $185,000 annually for the district.

Jeff Davis voters approved all four proposed constitutional amendments.
