A Sulphur man wounded during an officer-involved shooting Sunday night had put a gun to a woman’s head and pulled the trigger while her two children were in the home. The gun did not fire.
Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Kayla Vincent said deputies responded to a domestic incident at about 8 p.m. on Barn Stable Road in Lake Charles.
“Prior to the deputies arrival, they were advised the suspect, Matthew E. Calloway, 40, Sulphur, had put a gun to the victim’s head and pulled the trigger; however no one was shot at that time,” Vincent said.
When deputies arrived, they learned the woman and her two young children had managed to escape the residence.
Vincent said Calloway remained in the home and was pacing back and forth as deputies issued verbal commands for him to exit and approach them backwards in an effort to take him into custody.
“While walking backwards to deputies, Calloway suddenly turned toward deputies and pulled out a firearm,” Vincent said. “At that time, deputies fired their weapons, striking Calloway.”
She said he was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital, where he remains with non-life threatening injuries.
At the request of Sheriff Stitch Guillory, the Louisiana State Police have been called to investigate the deputy involved shooting.
Trooper Matt Gaspard said anyone with information, pictures or video from the shooting is asked to contact LSP detectives. Reporters may remain anonymous by using lsp.org and clicking on Report Suspicious or Criminal Activity, or calling the LSP Fusion Center Hotline at 1-800-434-8007.
“CPSO is continuing to investigate the domestic incident, and charges against Calloway are forthcoming,” Vincent said.
