TUESDAY’S GAME: LSU 11, UNO 1 (7 innings)
Ethan Frey’s second home run of the game brought the mercy rule into effect as No. 2-ranked LSU walked off with an 11-1 win over UNO in seven innings Tuesday.
Frey didn’t start the game but the former Rosepine star also hit a 3-run homer in his only other at-bat in the fifth inning and now has four for the year.
They were two of the Tigers’ four home runs while also getting four doubles in a 13-hit attack.
Jared Jones hit a 450-foot home run in the first inning while going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Freshman catcher Cade Arrambide hit a two-run shot in the third inning.
The Tigers (21-1) won their 16th straight game, one shy of the longest win streak since 2017. They now hit the road for a key SEC series in Austin against No. 8 Texas.
“This was a really good night for us swinging the bats,” head coach Jay Johnson said. “Another good performance by our offense. I think these guys have been incredibly consistent.
“I mean you see 11 runs, you see 13 hits. But even in the second inning, (when) we left the bases loaded, that inning, we hit four balls over 105 mph.”
After a rough start, righthander Jaden Noot (1-0) settled down for his got his first win in his first career start.
He walked the first batter he faced, followed by back to back singles that got UNO its first run before Noot recorded an out.
But he struck out the next three batters to limit the damage and didn’t allow another run over his four innings of work.
“Happy to have him back and healthy and contributing,” Johnson said of Noot, who missed all of last season with Tommy John surgery. “He had a little adversity there, the first three hitters of the game but, boy, he turned it on, struck out the side, and then really got rolling.”
Johnson was just hoping to get three innings out of Noot.
“Got four,” he said, “and he probably could have kept going to be honest with you.”
