Calvary Baptist ends Rosepine’s season in semifinals

Rosepine stayed within striking distance in the first half, but Calvary Baptist went on a scoring binge in the third quarter to beat the Eagles 87-55 in the Select Division III semifinals on Tuesday at Burton Coliseum.
It was the No. 5 Eagles’ first state tournament appearance since 1991 after upsetting three-time state champion No. 4 Isidore Newman in the quarterfinals. The loss ended the Eagles’ 25-game win streak.
“I am proud of my guys,” Rosepine head coach Logan Maddox said. “I don’t really care about the score.
“We are just thankful to be down here. A lot of people didn’t pick us to be down here, and that is fine. But I am proud of these guys, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.”
Calvary (28-3) will play No. 3 Metairie Park Country Day in the championship game on Friday at 4 p.m. Metairie Park Country Day beat No. 2 Dunham 54-53 in the semifinals.
Rosepine (28-4) trailed 36-27 at halftime, but the Cavaliers scored 33 points in the third quarter and led by as many as 29 points. Emmanuel Brownlee hit a jumper with 5:13 left in the third quarter to cut the Eagles’ deficit to 10, but Calvary went on a 15-3 run to pull away. Brownlee led Rosepine with 17 points and six rebounds.
Browlee gave the Eagles an early 2-0 lead, but the Eagles couldn’t extend it. Jacob Norris hit a pair of free throws late in the first quarter to cut the Cavaliers’ lead to 16-13 with 12 seconds left in the first quarter. Norris finished with 13 points, and Aiden Shell added 10.
Calvary held the Rosepine leading scorer Hayden Brister (24 ppg) to nine points on 3 of 16 shooting.
