Matt Viator returns to the McNeese State sidelines today after a nine-year absence as the Cowboys open spring practice.
Viator returns tied for most wins in program history, but the new (old) McNeese coach is ready to help turn the football team around rather than any reunion tour.
“I’m excited to get back on the field,” said Viator. “I’m excited to see where we are and looking forward to working with this group.”
Viator was re-named the head coach in December to return the program to its past championship status while keeping things fresh. He says he is happy with what he has seen so far.
“You never know what you got until you see them on the field, but we got what we wanted out of the offseason,” said Viator. “The players have adapted and bought into what we have done and what we have asked them to do.
“I am pleased with the effort and the way they have gone about their business.”
Viator and his staff are expecting 98 players this spring in workouts, with a few missing due to injuries. The Cowboys will hold three practices weekly over the next five weeks in preparation for next fall.
Viator added that he expects most injured players to return by June 1. In the summer, McNeese will add 14 high school newcomers and any additional portal players they may get following the semester.
“We will try to do three teams through spring,” said Viator. “What is important is getting them used to our routine, how we do things.
“I want to make sure we are doing it the way we want it done. What separates you is how you do things every day.”
Viator’s staff considers the learning process key, but it goes both ways. They also have to find out what their players can do.
“We will have to make some adjustments when we see the players out there,” said offensive coordinator Tyler Bolfing. “You have to play to their strengths as well.”
There is also a learning curve regarding the coaching staff. Viator kept a group from the last staff and added his own pieces. The transition has gone smoothly, according to all.
“It has been great,” said Tony Pecoraro, who returns as defensive coordinator. “Everything has been smooth. We are on the same page.”
The coaches are excited about the off-season work so far. Players have been involved in meetings and the weight room.
“We have seen a lot of progress and now we are looking forward to seeing it on the field,” said Viator.
That process starts now.
