Oakdale got some big shots in the second half and won the turnover battle Saturday at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond to earn their second girls basketball state championship in three seasons.
The No. 1 Warriors beat No. 2 Oak Grove 48-43 for the Non-select Division III state championship despite an MVP performance by the Tigers’ 6-5 sophomore center Caroline Bradley.
Bradley had 38 points, 22 rebounds and six blocks and single-handedly kept the Tigers (21-5) in the lead most of the first three quarters. Bradley scored 30 of the Tigers’ 32 points through the third quarter.
Oakdale (26-7) forced 23 turnovers, including four in the final minute of the game. The Warriors broke a 43-43 tie and closed the game on a 5-0 run. Senior Kaylee Bradley made 4 of 4 free throws in the final 20 seconds and finished with 22 points to lead the Warriors. Bradley was 10 of 10 from the free-throw line.
Oakdale, who closed the season on a 15-game win streak, scored 26 points off those 23 turnovers and committed just one turnover in the second half to help them overcome their offense struggles as they shot 27 percent (15 of 55).
It all started to change for the Warriors in the final minute of the third quarter as Jolie West and Kaylee Bradley hit 3-pointers to give Oakdale its first lead, 33-32, since the first quarter. The Warriors hadn’t made a 3-pointer up to that point.
Oakdale senior Emani Young, the MVP of the Warriors’ 2023 state championship win, had eight points, five rebounds, and five steals. Junior Jolie West had eight points and seven rebounds.
