Tors win 2OT thriller, Thibodeaux hits clutch shots

Senior Carson Thibodeaux wasn’t ready for his career to end Tuesday night at Sulphur High School. The 6-3 guard was clutch as the No. 8 Tors beat No. 9 Ouachita 75-73 in overtime.

He scored 20 points in his final home game, including two shots that helped send the Tors to the quarterfinals for the second time in three seasons.

“I was definitely a little bit nervous, but it’s my senior season,” Thibodeaux said. “I love these boys, every one of my teammates, and I just refuse to lose. I think we’re too good. I think we should go all the way to Burton this year and I refuse to lose, so I had to come out big for my team.”

The first came in the waning seconds of regulation. The Tors were down 58-54 and Thibodeaux sank a 3-pointer and a free throw after he was fouled on the play with 24 seconds left.

He scored six points in the second overtime, including a turnaround jumper in the lane with 49 seconds left for the lead, 74-73. He also had two defensive rebounds in the closing seconds to prevent the Lions from getting any extra shots off.

“We had to make sure that we came back to our game plan, which was to stop letting them get second chance points, and just making sure we’re closing out, not fouling all the shooters, and making sure we’re taking advantage of every defensive play,” Thibodeaux said.

The Tors also got a big night from senior Ian Malone, who scored a game-high 33 points. He scored nine points in the second quarter as the Tors battled back from a seven-point deficit midway through the quarter to tie the game 28-28 at halftime.

The Tors trailed by six points, 58-52, 51 seconds left in the fourth quarter before forcing overtime with a 6-0 run. Malone started the run after he made two of three throws after he was fouled attempting a 3-pointer.

Sulphur led 66-60 in the first overtime after a Malone three and a bucket in the lane by Giorgio Ingrosso, but Zion Hunter forced a second overtime with a deep 3-pointer with five seconds left. Hunter led the Lions with 22 points.

Sulphur will travel to No. 1 Zachary in the quarterfinals.
