Sacred Heart 43, Rosepine 40
HAMMOND – No. 3 Rosepine mounted a furious fourth quarter comeback, but their bid at three-peat fell short Monday at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association girls basketball state tournament.
The Eagles lost to No. 2 Academy of Sacred Heart 43-40 in the Select Division III semifinals. Rosepine was trying to add to back-to-back Nonselect Division III state titles.
The Eagles (23-10) trailed 35-24 with 7:12 left in the game before a 12-2 run got them back into the game. Amaya Shine hit a 3-pointer with 3:35 left to cut the Cardinals’ lead to 37-34, and Raylen Farris made it a one-point game with a bucket a minute later.
Rosepine got within one two more times, including Farris’ 3-pointer with 1:43 left in the game.
Sacred Heart (20-6) trailed only once by dominating the board 45-25 and scoring 20 second chance points despite turning the ball over 24 times under constant fullcourt pressure from the Eagles’ defense.
Farris led Rosepine with 16 points, and Shine finished with 15.
Sacred Heart’s Leah Varisco led all scorers with 17 points.
Simpson 74, Reeves 59
HAMMOND – No. 4 Reeves stayed within striking distance early, but a big second-quarter run allowed No. 1 Simpson to start pulling away for a 74-59 win in the Class C semifinals.
Juliana Frazier hit a three to cut Simpson’s lead to 22-16 early in the second quarter. But Simpson went on a 10-2 run to go up 32-18. Kelsey Williams hit three consecutive 3-pointers in a one-minute span as the second quarter closed, but the Raiders never fully recovered from the Broncos’ big run.
Frazier led Reeves with 14 points. Kelsey Williams finished with 12 points, and Lailah Williams added 10.
Olivia Edwards led the Broncos with 31 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double.
The Broncos outrebounded the Raiders 66-43, led by Isabella Hunnicutt’s 18 boards.
