For the second straight day, the Cowboys walked off with a victory over Oakland Sunday evening.

Matt Stancliff’s bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the ninth gave McNeese State’s baseball team a 4-3 win and sweep of the visiting Golden Grizzlies at Joe Miller Ballpark.

The Cowboys improved to 5-1 on the young season with their third-straight one-run win of the weekend.

“We got a chance to see what our team is made of,” said McNeese head coach Justin Hill. “This shows our character.”

Stancliff ripped a shot to the left-field wall for the winning hit off Ryan Uhlenhake (0-1).

“I was just trying to get something in the air to score the run,” said Stancliff.

Braedyn Cunningham (1-0) picked up the victory in relief.

Stancliff’s hit scored Larry Edwards from third. Edwards, who had two hits, including a triple, started the ninth with a walk. He was bunted to second and then stole third.

Two batters later, Stancliff won the game for the Cowboys. The loss dropped Oakland to 1-6.

SOFTBALL

Alexis Dibbley and Jada Munoz hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning as McNeese State swept its weekend with a trio of victories.

Munoz hit her fourth home run of the season in the fifth, as the Cowgirls powered past Kansas City for the second time in three days, 5-4.

With the win, McNeese improved to 10-4 overall. It was the sixth straight victory for the streaking Cowgirls, who will head to Ole Miss on Wednesday night before playing in the Jane Moore Memorial Tournament next weekend at Auburn.

It is a major step up in competition for the Cowgirls, who have already played No. 6 and SEC power Tennessee twice this season.

Maddie Taylor improved to 5-1 with the win, while Kandence Williams earned her first save by working the last two innings.
