Revving up realism: Automotive elegance reflects ‘lust’ for life

A collection of paintings that transforms automotive design into high-octane fine art is on display at the Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center, located at 1001 Ryan St.

“Luster: Realism and Hyperrealism in Contemporary Automobile and Motorcycle Painting” is an exhibition of realistic and hyperrealistic and seemingly photographic paintings that captures the “elegance, power and personality” of a range of vehicles, from vintage to modern designs, said  Lake Charles Director of Cultural Affairs Payton Dodds.

The realistic and hyperrealistic styles capture subjects in detail. Cars and motorcycles are engaging subjects for these traditions because of their features: reflective chrome, polished paint and intricate details.

“These styles emphasize precision, depth, and surface textures, making automobiles perfect for showcasing artistic skill,” Dodds explained. “The way light interacts with metal, glass and enamel allows artists to create visually striking, almost photographic works that capture the essence of these machines.”

“Luster” is an exhibit that can be appreciated by those from many walks of life. It bridges the gap between the two worlds of fine art and automotive design, creating an exhibit for art aficionados and car enthusiasts, she said.

It also allows patrons to learn about the history of the modern automobile and celebrate its cultural significance.

The exhibit features more than 50 paintings created by 14 realist and hyperrealist artists from throughout the country: A.D. Cook, Randy Ford, Allan Gorman, Marc G. Jones, Cheryl Kelley, Richard Lewis, Lory Lockwood, Robert Petillo, Kris Preslan, Joseph Santos, Ken Scaglia, John E. Schaeffer, Guenevere “Moto Painter” Schwien and Harold D. Zabady.

“Luster” is exhibited in the third-floor gallery. It will be available for viewing until April 26.

The Historic City Hall is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Admission is free.
