Tors win first district title since 2010

SULPHUR – After 15 long years, the Sulphur boys basketball team celebrated a district championship Tuesday night.

Sulphur led wire-to-wire to beat rival Barbe 47-34 at least a share of the District 3-5A title. The Tors (28-4, 6-0) can win the district title outright on Friday with a win at Lafayette (15-9, 5-1).

The Bucs (13-14, 2-4) held the Tors to 34 percent shooting and one of their lowest point totals of the season, but the Tors started to get some separation in the second quarter.  Blaine Davey, who scored a game-high 11 points, and Carson Thibodaux hit 3-pointers to help spark an 8-0 run for the Tors.

Barbe chipped away at the Tors’ lead and pulled with two points, 30-28, with 7:19 left in the game when Justin Rideaux scored after a Sulphur turnover.

Sulphur outscored Barbe 17-8 over the final seven minutes of the game.

The Tors made up for the low-scoring night with a strong advantage on the boards, 32-22, led by senior forward Giorgio Ingrosso. The Italian exchange student had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Tylon Sam led Barbe with 10 points.
