Rain washes away Cowboys’ trip

After a solid opening weekend, the Cowboys baseball team was set to take on the nation’s best Tuesday.

However, they won’t get that chance. At least not right now.

McNeese State’s game against No. 1 Texas A&M, scheduled for Tuesday evening in College Station, was canceled due to the weather. As of now, no makeup date has been set.

“It’s a little disappointing, but there isn’t anything we can do about it,” said McNeese head coach Justin Hill. “You always want to play great competition and see how your players manage the moment.

“We will see if we can find a date to make the game up at a later time, but this week didn’t work out. Playing there is a great atmosphere and our kids were looking forward to it. Hope we get a chance to go back there.”

The Cowboys have lost the last 12 to the Aggies (3-0), with Texas A&M holding a 28-5 series advantage. Last year, McNeese opened the season with three games at Blue Bell Park, dropping all three.

“They are a great program,” said Hill. “They are always challenged to play.”

With only six games scheduled before the Southland Conference begins, Hill knows how valuable each time on the diamond can be.

“We will play an intrasquad game and try to make it feel like a road game as best we can,” said Hill. “You have to take advantage of any chance you can get on the field at this time of year.”

McNeese went 2-1 last weekend when they opened at home against Wichita State. The Cowboys won the first two games before falling Sunday.

“We did a good job all weekend,” said Hill. “We gave ourselves a chance to win the last game. We saw parts that we are capable of doing and parts that we need to work on.”

McNeese will be home this weekend when Oakland University visits for a three-game series starting Friday at Joe Miller Ballpark. The Golden Grizzlies are 1-3 after their opening series at Jacksonville State.

They are on a long road trip to start the season, playing games in Texas the week after McNeese.

“They have to travel early in the year, so they are used to playing on the road,” said Hill.
