For an afternoon of sweets, art treats and altruism, stop by the Sweet Art Silent Auction this Saturday.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at South City Christian Church, 323 W. Sale Road, Hobo Hotel for Cats will host its 13th annual charity auction. The shelter hosts an auction each year to raise money for operational costs.
Hobo Hotel celebrated its 25th anniversary at the end of last year. Over 9,000 cats have been spayed and neutered, and 5,500 have been homed, in that quarter-century. Event Chair and Hobo Hotel Volunteer Arlene Avery did not downplay the positive effects of their work.
“This is a huge community service,” she told the American Press. “Just imagine the number of cats and kittens that would be roaming our community if we did not.”
There are currently over 130 cats in Hobo Hotel’s care. Avery said they wish they could care for more.
“We wish we could rescue all homeless cats and kittens but we cannot.”
Hobo Hotel does not receive local, state or federal funding, so events like the Sweet Art Auction ensure the shelter has the resources it needs to remain operational – food, shelter and medical care for cats. Last year’s event was one of the most successful, she said. The shelter grossed over $9,000.
There will be items for everyone at the auction, from confectionary delights to homemade art pieces.
This year features donations from several locals, like Candice Alexander, Mud Bug Treasures, Elton Louviere, Steve Hill, Rhonda Godwin, Kori Parker, Lashonda Landry, Connie Avery, Kamryn Avery and Tracy Avery.
Those unable to attend the auction but inclined to help can always donate supplies, including litter, food, kitten replacement milk and cleaning materials.
The Sweet Art Auction is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served
