‘Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler’: Exhibit focuses on the fun, splendor of Mardi Gras

Add one more stop to the Mardi Gras to-do list. Catch the “beads.” Trip the light slaptastic. See the sparkle on the second floor of the Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center, 1001 Ryan St.

The Gallery by the Lake members’ group exhibition, “Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler” features artists Angelle Boyette and Susan Didelot.

Boyette is big into beads. Art, bourbon and festival lovers may have noticed her bead-covered barrel that was auctioned off during Smoke and Barrel for United Way. She also used recycled Mardi Gras beads to add a little joy de vive to the Gator on the Geaux at the Pediatric Center.

“That gator lived with us for six months,” Boyette said. “God bless my family. I had Mardi Gras beads everywhere.”

The granddaughter of French-speaking grandparents is proud of and passionate about her Cajun/Creole heritage and culture.

Mentored by the late Anne Dentler, Didelot is proficient in various types of technique. The Jennings native with the microbiology and chemistry background now calls Lake Charles home.

Her interest in art began at the age of 6, she said, and her endeavors today are more play as opposed to work.

Currently, her relaxation comes from a textured style called “Slap Art.” A bright and vivid color palette paired with thoughtful subject matter injects her work with an air of mystery, giving the receiver an opportunity to immerse themselves in the scene and reflect.

“Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler”also coincides with the Krewe of Contraband 60th Diamond Anniversary that will be featured on Historic City Hall’s second floor marble gallery, which features handmade Mardi Gras ballgowns inspired by the music of the 60’s.

Other Gallery by the Lake members will contribute to the exhibition.

Most of the work is priced for sale. Some have sold and will remain on display for the duration of the exhibition.

See it Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Saturday, March 8. Admission is free.
