The Sulphur girls basketball team pulled off a dramatic last-second win and the boys surged in the second half to complete a sweep of rival Barbe last week.
On Saturday, the Sulphur girls got the ball with 38 seconds left and the score tied 37-37 and went the full length of the court against the Bucs’ press. Ivy Broussard penetrated the lane and hit Alyssa Martin for a backdoor layup, head coach Matt LeBato.
“We got it across and took our time,” LeBato said. “We wanted to make the last shot, and we executed.
“It was a fun game and a fun atmosphere. We were glad to be on this end of it.”
It was a big turnaround for the Tors after they lost to the Bucs 66-45 on Jan. 7 in a nondistrict game. They are 16-0 when they hold opponents under 40 points.
“We are getting more experience, not only the girls but myself, learning the atmosphere and learning everyone’s programs,” LeBato said. “We are trying to get better every day, and it paid off for us.”
Presley Gunter had 14 points and nine rebounds for Sulphur and Broussard added 13 points. Maleigha James led the Bucs with 12 points, and Davelyn Richard scored 10 points off the bench.
On Friday, the Sulphur boys pulled away in the second half to beat the Bucs 53-33 in a nondistrict game.
Barbe’s Tylon Sam hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the Tors’ lead to 16-13 at halftime. Sulphur outscored Barbe 36-20 in the second half led by Blaine Davey and Ian Malone. Davey went 7-for-7 and scored 18 points, while Malone scored 15 points. The duo scored 26 points in the second half.
“We stayed dominant defensively and finally caught a rhythm on offense,” Sulphur boys head coach Adam Coleman said. “We definitely execute on offense in the second half.
“We attacked together better and started sharing the ball better.”
John Stokes led Barbe with 10 points.
