SW La. schools to remain closed on Thursday

School districts in the region will remain closed on Thursday.

Southwest Louisiana has received record-breaking levels of snow this week. In response, the school districts throughout the region closed schools on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Calcasieu Parish School Board announced its schools and facilities will remain closed on Thursday because of the continued “below-freezing temperatures and poor road conditions.” District personnel will complete the building assessment on Thursday to determine the status of school on Friday.

The Bishop Noland Episcopal Day School campuses will also be closed on Thursday.

All Beauregard Parish schools will be closed on Thursday, but BPSB offices will open at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Closer to the coast, Cameron Parish schools announced Thursday’s school closure Tuesday night.

“I do not feel it is safe to place our buses on the road or ask our staff to commute to work under these hazardous conditions,” said Charley Lemons, superintendent of Cameron Parish Schools, in a news release. “In addition to the challenges posed by the roads, we must also consider the conditions around our school entrances and stairways, where ice is likely to remain through Thursday morning.”

All Allen Parish schools and offices will remain closed Thursday.

“As temperatures are anticipated to rise slightly above freezing for a limited time and with more freezing weather expected (overnight Wednesday) and into (Thursday) morning, we have made the decision to postpone classes for an additional day,” Superintendent Brad Soileau said.

The postponement will also allow teams to conduct through checks for any plumbing issues or other concerns on campuses in advance of a possible anticipated return on Friday, he said.

Officials will continue to monitor weather and traveling conditions before announcing a decision on Friday.

Jeff Davis Parish schools will be closed Thursday, Jan. 23 for the safety of all students, staff and families.

“It is forecasted that roads and bridges will have ice and snowpack on them without sufficient time to melt on Wednesday afternoon,” Superintendent John Hall said.

Families are urged to continue to follow the School Board’s Facebook website for decisions concerning Friday.

“Jeff Davis will pull through this as we always have using common sense and teamwork,” Hall said.

School officials are scheduled to assess its buildings and visit all campuses Thursday afternoon when temperatures are expected to be in the 40s, according to Hall.

McNeese State Universitywill continue to hold classes online Thursday and anticipates returning to in-person classes on campus on Friday.

On Friday, all offices should be open from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. in order to catch up on backlogged work.

All Sowela Technical Community College locations will remain closed Thursday; however, online classes will still be held.
