Calcasieu Police Jury offices closed Thursday, garbage collection delayed

Due to snow, ice, and below-freezing temperatures in Southwest Louisiana, all Calcasieu Parish Police Jury offices will be closed on Thursday.

Roads are expected to refreeze overnight as temperatures drop. Residents are asked to avoid travel.

The Residential Solid Waste Convenience Centers in Lake Charles and Sulphur will also be closed Thursday, Jan. 23.

The Calcasieu Public Transit System will not be in service on Thursday, Jan. 23.

The Police Jury is partnering with Water’s Edge Gathering Church in Lake Charles and the Sulphur Christian Community Coalition to operate warming centers. The Salvation Army will also provide housing for around 40 men at its 3020 Legion St. location in Lake Charles. The City of Lake Charles has opened a warming center at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center.  It is open 24 hours daily and is scheduled to close Thursday at noon. The Police Jury is assisting in the effort.

Those needing transportation to these warming centers are asked to call 211.

CPPJ’s Engineering and Public Works crews are currently working to clear roads of snow and ice. Bridges and overpasses remain extremely icy.

With temperatures above freezing, dripping faucets is not necessary. As temperatures drop overnight below freezing, residents are asked to drip faucets, instead of running a stream of water.
