An Iowa, La., man is facing attempted murder charges in connection with an officer-involved shooting Friday that injured a Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy.

Mark Gabriel Buller, 44, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted disarming of a police officer, disarming a police officer, aggravated second-degree battery, resisting a police officer with force or violence and attempted theft of a motor vehicle. Buller has an active warrant for failure to register as a sex offender and simple burglary.

Buller is being held in the Jeff Davis parish Correctional Center without bond.

The deputy has been identified as Patrol Sgt. Josh Clement.

Clement and Buller were both transported to local hospitals where they were treated and released for their injuries, Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff Kyle Miers said Sunday.

The incident began around 7:37 p.m. Friday as Clement was patrolling the area of La. 99, south of La. 102 near Welsh.

“Sgt. Clement was traveling southbound and observed an unknown male who was walking northbound on La. 99,” Miers said. “Due to the cold weather and lack of light on the highway, Sgt. Clement turned around to assist the individual.”

He said a physical altercation occurred during the incident which caused Clement to discharge his weapon. Miers could not provide any additional information on the shooting due to an ongoing investigation by State Police.

Miers requested assistance from the Louisiana State Police to investigate the weapon discharge.

Buller was taken into custody without further incident by additional deputies who had arrived at the scene, Miers said.

Miers thanked all the agencies that assisted with the incident, including officers from the Fenton Police Department and  Welsh Police Department who transported Clement to a local hospital. He also thanked the Louisiana State Police for assisting in the investigation and the Jennings Police Department for offering assistance with patrolling the parish and the Lake Charles Police Department and Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office for blocking traffic while transporting Clement to the hospital.
