There is an opportunity Thursday enjoy orchestral holiday music surrounded by candles under the Sallier Oak.

At 6 p.m. at the Imperial Calcasieu Museum, 204 W. Sallier St., the Lake Charles Symphony will host “Jingle & Jazz: Candles Under the Lighted Sallier Oak.”

The concert will feature five symphony musicians — Peggy DeMers, principal horn; Paul Morton, trumpet; Ricky Peters, principal trumpet; William Rose, conductor and bass trombone/euphonium; Andrew Usie, trombone. DeMers and Rose will also be featured on the alphorn — a long-wind instrument traditionally used in the European Alps.

The performance is part of the Symphony’s continued mission to “showcase the very best of what the arts in Southwest Louisiana have to offer,” said Symphony Executive Director Beth Dawdy.

One of SW La.’s gems is the 200-year-old Sallier Oak that is nestled on the grounds of ICM. Each year, the oak is illuminated during the holiday season. Gathering under the “canopy of lighted branches” as a community to will be a “breathtaking experience,” she said.

“What a unique setting to enjoy the sounds of the season than surrounded by holiday jazz and candles.”

ICM Creative Director Ashley Royer said the museum is proud to serve as a festive gathering place for Southwest Louisiana’s creatives.

“Set beneath the boughs of the Historic Sallier Oak and amidst the soft glow of fairy lights and candle’s light, the event will offer a truly enchanting experience for all who attend.”

Rose told the American Press the concert will feature a diverse selection of “jazzy,” well-loved Christmas songs, including “Christmas Time is Here” from “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” “Jingle Bells,” “Let it Snow,” “White Christmas” and  “Jolly Old St. Nicholas.”

Guests can also expect a modern jazz rendition of “Sleigh Reid” composed by Leroy Anderson that will allow Peters to “practice his horse whinny,” Rose said.

An hour before the performance starts, the gallery will open to offer coffee, hot chocolate and eggnog to guests.
