The Iowa nearly pulled off another come-from-behind win Friday, but No. 1 Franklinton scored in the closing minutes to win 35-29 and stop the Yellow Jackets run at history in the Non-select Division II semifinals.
No. 5 Iowa (12-2), who entered the game on an 11-game win streak, was attempting to reach the finals for the first time in program history.
Just like its quarterfinal game at Franklin Parish last week, Iowa trailed 22-7 at halftime. They opened the second half with a 74-yard drive on a 4-yard touchdown run by Jonathan Walker Jr. to cut the Demons’ lead to 22-15 after a two-point conversion run by Cohen Charles.
With Franklinton (12-1) threatening to extend its lead again, Jeremiah Bushnell intercepted a pass in the end zone, then turned around and caught a 66-yard touchdown pass from Reed Dupre to tie the game at 22-22 with 5:52 left in the third quarter.
Iowa tied it again, 29-29, on a 9-yard reception by Bushnell with 3:22 left in the game, but Franklinton tight end scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 31-yard reception with 1:18 left.
Bushnell finished the game with eight catches for 168 yards and three touchdowns while Dupre completed 11 of 28 passes for 200 yards and was intercepted twice.
Franklinton will face Cecilia in the finals next week. No. 18 Cecilia beat No. 6 Plaquemine 55-35 on Friday.
