Marie Genevieve “Gene” Stawecki, age 91, peacefully passed away in her home on Dec. 2, 2024
Gene was born on June 26, 1933, in Leonville, La., to Dewey and Zoia Rozas. She graduated from Basile High School in 1952 and attended business school in Lake Charles, La.
Gene traveled extensively and lived in England, Germany, Massachusetts, Maryland, and California, then returned to Louisiana and resided in Moss Bluff for the past 40 years.
Gene was a long-time member of St. Theodore’s Catholic Church, where she spent countless hours decorating the church and serving as a Eucharistic minister. She was also a member of St. Theodore’s Alter Society. Gene’s favorite hobbies were gardening, dancing, and quilting. She belonged to the local Quilt Guild and made numerous quilts that she gifted to her family, veterans, and dialysis patients for many years. She was still mowing her yard, raking, and weeding her flower beds into her late 80s. She was also a member of the Mardi Gras carnival krewe “Krewe Du Masque” and enjoyed riding in the parade, dressing up, and attending the ball. She was an avid “Mexican Train Dominos” player who was usually the winner at family games.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dewey and Zoia Rozas; brother, Floyd Rozas, and sister, Mary Norris.
Gene is survived by her four children, Aimee Stawecki, Cathy Ayo, Billy Stawecki, and David Stawecki (Jimena); four grandchildren, Kyle Ayo (Danielle), William “David,” Mari-Beth and Spencer Stawecki, and two great-grandchildren, Brennen and Brenley Ayo, as well as her best friend, Annie Boyette and two beloved cats.
The family will receive friends on Friday, Dec. 6, 2024, from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the chapel of Lakeside Funeral Home. A rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Saint Theodore’s Catholic Church. The Rev. Aubrey Guilbeau is to officiate. Burial will follow at a later date at Saint Ann’s Church Cemetery in Mamou, La.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Theodore’s Catholic Church in Moss Bluff.
