Born Jan. 31, 1941, in Jennings, La., to Garlin N. and Velma Sensat Hebert, Sherrill spent his early years in the vibrant community of Sulphur. It was here where he would meet the love of his life, Roberta Ann Reinstein, just around the corner from his family home. The couple married in August, 1964, celebrating over 60 wonderful years together.
A graduate of Sulphur High School, he was also a graduate of McNeese State University in Physics. While in the Army, he obtained a Masters of Business at Tulane University in New Orleans, La. and a Masters of Technology at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and a short course at MIT.
Sherrill was a proud Eagle Scout and Civil Air Patrol member. He had a lifelong passion for the outdoors, enjoying countless hunting, fishing and skeet shooting adventures.
He was a longtime active member of Ducks Unlimited and dedicated several years to volunteering at the Isaak Walton League in Northern Virginia.
A devoted patriot, Sherrill served honorably in both the Marines and Army, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His remarkable military career spanned over 26 years, including one tour in the Dominican Republic and three tours in Vietnam. Proudly serving with the 82 Airborne, he was a combat infantryman and ranger. He was the recipient of many awards including three Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, and, a meritorious service metal. He was assigned to the Pentagon near his family home of Fairfax, Va. for the remainder of his military career.
Sherrill and Roberta welcomed their first child, Ann, followed by twins, Sherrill (Smokey) and Sherri (Petunia). He treasured his children, who were the warm-up acts for the great joy he found in his grandchildren, Jake, Jordan, Jack, Foster and Ryker.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta; his children and grandchildren, and his sister, Meredith Hebert Perkins, of Lake Charles, La. and her children, Christiane (Jeff) Aguillard, Jennifer (Charles) Karam, and their children, Gabrielle and Meredith Camille Karam and Ana-Claire Perkins.
Sherrill’s legacy of love, service and adventure will continue to inspire all who knew him.
We were so lucky to have had him so long. It is a tremendous loss. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
Sherrill will be interred at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his honor to Ducks Unlimited or St. Mary of Sorrows Catholic Church, 5222 Sideburn Rd, Fairfax, VA 22032.
