LSU comes to terms with loss, Tigers licking wounds after hit to pride

Even as LSU turned its attention to this week’s game at Florida, the postmortem on the Tigers’ lopsided loss to Alabama continued on Monday.

Head coach Brian Kelly summed up the 42-13 debacle.

“You had a really good football team that played consistent and you had another team that had the will and desire but did not play consistently,” he said.

Kelly went down a laundry list of the Crimson Tide’s strong points — playing with an identity, taking care of the football, controlling the line of scrimmage.

“Our response was that we were inconsistent,” Kelly said. “We had an opportunity to score on the first drive … we turned the football over (three times), we had chances to get off the field on third down.

“Our guys were up for the fight, they were competitive, played hard. But it’s not good enough if you’re not consistent.

“As coaches we’ve got to help our guys become more consistent and then our players have to execute more consistently.”

The Tigers will try to bounce back on the road — traveling for the third time in four games — against a Florida team also licking its wounds.

The Gators (4-5, 2-4 Southeastern Conference) lost 48-17 at Texas on Saturday.

The ugly loss to Alabama had Tigers fans grumbling more than usual as the loss all but assuredly knocked LSU out of contention for the 12-team College Football Playoff.

The uptick in criticism does not bother Kelly.

“I’m pretty confident that we know what we’re doing,” he said. “Am I happy about what happened? No. Nobody is, especially when you had an opportunity to get back into that game. Nobody’s happy about that.

“I’m not in a position to worry about what people are saying about the overall health of the program. But when it comes to the overall look of the program. We have one of the top recruiting classes in the country. Those things are only going to get better.

“A championship program is what we’re going to have here. There’s going to be some stumbles along the way but we’re going to get back up and we’re going to keep building our program to where it needs to be.”

a WOUNDED TIGERS: Kelly had no definitive word on the return of starting left guard Garrett Dellinger, who missed the Alabama game with a high ankle sprain. Dellinger, who underwent “TightRope” surgery for the injury suffered against Texas A&M, was set to run on Monday and, Kelly said, “We’ll get a better sense of where he’s at after today’s workout.”

Dellinger was replaced by redshirt freshman Paul Mubenga making his first start.

“Paul did some good things,” Kelly said. “He moves his feet very well … for a first-time starter we were pleased with what he did and I think he’s only going to improve from that experience.”
