MOSS BLUFF — In her final home game, senior middle hitter Ava Henry had a career day with a triple-double to lead No. 2 Sam Houston back to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state volleyball ball tournament for the third consecutive season.

Henry had a school single-game record 32 kills, plus 13 blocks and 11 digs to lead the Broncos (38-6) to a 28-26, 24-26, 25-22, 25-12 win over No. 15 Assumption (18-24) in the regional round of the Division II playoffs.

“We’ve never had anybody that hit that, so that’s a school record,” Sam Houston head coach Rene Fontenot said. “She did so well.

“We’ve demanded a lot of her this year. So her playing six rotations, she’s just always going instead of just rolling out and going back in fresh on the front row. She has adjusted very well to that. So I’m super proud of how she has evolved as a volleyball player.”

It was also the final home match for Fontenot, who will retire after the season.

“I’m so excited, and I’m so happy for this group of kids because they played this hard schedule as far as the sheer amount of games,” Fontenot said. “But I’ve had to try to keep them from talking about next week and not looking past today, good thing, good thing.

“Now they can. Now we can talk about next week. I’m very, very excited for this group of kids.”

Sam Houston will play No. 7 Kenner Discovery Health Science (29-7) on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Sam Houston led by as many as five points in the second set, but the Mustangs used a 6-0 run to take a 14-13 lead. Sam Houston never had more than a one-point lead after that, and Assumption took the lead back, 25-24, on a kill by Randi Daigle. But Sam Houston responded in the third set and finally strung together a long series of points to go from a one-point lead, 10-9, to a seven-point lead, 20-13, with four kills from Henry.

“(It was) very much what I expected, based on scouting reports and having seen them a few places,” Fontenot said. “They’re very disciplined, so, although no big hitters, they keep the ball in play.

“We gave up those series of points, the clusters. So we talked about how we had to work harder to not allow for that, to get ahead and stay ahead. But we’ve been doing more drills where they’re kind of pressed and put in pressure situations so that they better handle it.”

The Mustangs got back within two points on an ace by Braylie Alleman. But Henry killed the Mustangs’ momentum with three big kills, and Aubrey Portie closed out the third set with a kill from the left side. Sam Houston took the energy from the third set and never trailed in the fourth set to punch their ticket to the Cajundome.

Portie finished with 19 kills, six blocks, and four aces, setter Bailey Foolkes had 46 assists, 12 digs, and 5 blocks. Salem Arceneaux had 42 digs.
