Jeff Davis elects two new mayors, re-elects police chief

Jeff Davis Parish voters on Tuesday elected new mayors in Elton and Fenton while re-electing the police chief in Welsh.

The aldermen race in Welsh was also decided while the Fenton aldermen’s race is headed to a December runoff.

Interim Mayor Mike Pierrotti was elected the next mayor of Elton in a special election.

Pierrotti was elected mayor with 277 votes, or 63 percent, over former alderwoman Marilynn Broussard Granger who got 163 votes, or 37 percent of the vote, according to complete but unofficial results from the Secretary of State’s Office.

The election was held to fill the remaining term of former mayor Kesia Lemoine, who was removed from office by a recall election in April. Pierrotti was appointed by the town council in May to fill the vacated seat until an election could be held.

In Fenton, Phil Cormier unseated long-time mayor Eddie B. Alfred Jr., who has served for 15 years.

Cormier was elected with 70 votes, or 56 percent of the vote, defeating Alfred — who received 56 votes, or 44 percent.

Fenton voters re-elected Manuel Alfred as aldermen with 67 votes, or 20 percent, of the votes.

The two remaining seats on the board of aldermen will be decided in a four-person runoff slated for December between Marella Bellard, who received 50 votes, or 15 percent of the votes; incumbent Jessie Boesa Jr., who received 39 votes, or 12 percent; John Langley, who got 40 votes, or 12 percent; and incumbent Alicia Scott, who drew 50 votes, or 15 percent.

Those not making the race were Katherine Corbello, who had 27 votes, or 8 percent; Geneva Joseph, who drew 28 votes, or 8 percent of the votes; and Shyra Taylor taking 37 votes, or 11 percent of the votes. 

In Welsh, Marcus Crochet was re-elected police chief with 880 votes, or 66 percent, over challenger Marcus “Cummings” Prudhomme, who got 449 votes, or 34 percent.

The Welsh aldermen’s race was decided with Charles “Chuck” Abel Jr. received 1,034 votes, or 19 percent; incumbent Jackie Balmer received 847 votes, or 16 percent; Melward “Nookie” Doucet Jr., 814 votes, or 15 percent; incumbent Andrea King with 884 votes, or 17 percent; and incumbent Lawrence “Bugger” Mier who drew 956 votes, or 18 percent.

Incumbent Ronald L. “Ronnie” Hayes was not re-elected after receiving 788 votes, or 15 percent.

Incumbent alderman Clint Hardy did not seek re-election to another term.

Across the parish, voters favored incumbent Clay Higgins for the 3rd Congressional District seat with 11,147 votes, or 80 percent, and Clayton Davis for 3rd Circuit Court of appeal judge, with 5,293 votes, or 62 percent.

Donald Trump led the presidential election with 11,477 votes, or 80 percent. Kamala Harris received 2,699 votes, or 19 percent of the vote.

Voters favored Constitutional amendment No. 1 by a vote of 9,932, or 73 percent.
