Sulphur water quality conversations to be held this week

Residents can find out more about the test results of a water sample pulled from a Houston River Waterworks District 11 location during a meeting Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Sulphur Regional Library.

A member of Micah 6:8, an environmental advocacy and education nonprofit, posted the results of a water test on social media before a second test could confirm or refute results. The posts and comments have been removed.

Micah 6:8 founder and executive director Cindy Robertson emailed the test results to the American Press, along with an analysis of the results from Wilma Subra, a chemist and environmentalist.

“Diesel organic materials were present in the sample, and we’re hoping it was just a fluke,” Robertson said. “We are testing again to verify the results.”

In the meantime, Robertson is holding the meeting to talk about water quality, saline injections at the salt domes, and what she thinks is a threat to the Chicot Aquifer.

“We took this sample as a baseline to use in the future as the salt dome continues to sink. We were not expecting to find anything at this time,” she said.

Robertson said the water is tested by the Louisiana Department of Health annually, and it is safe to drink by its standards.

Claude Swope, operations manager, confirmed that LDH and the Environmental Protection Agency guidelines are followed as mandated. The Consumer Confidence Report is completed on an annual basis by LDH and lists any violations.
