SULPHUR — Area athletes moved a step closer to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state swim meet next month with some strong performances at the Tor Invitational Friday at the Sulphur Parks and Recreation Aquatic Center.

Led by Louisa Rossowski’s four golds, Barbe swept the team titles with 460 points for the boys and 413 for the girls. Sulphur was runner-up in both divisions.

Rossowski was the lone athlete to win gold in four events.

She won individual honors in the 100 (59.70) and 200 freestyle (2:11.77), plus a pair of relays with the leadoff spot in the 200 medley (2:14.60) and third leg in the 200 freestyle (2:02.62).

Westlake Talen Garrard took home three golds. The defending Division III 100 butterfly state champion, won the 200 individual medley (2:11.62) and 100 freestyle (50.86) and helped the Rams win the 200 medley relay and improve their time by a third of a second to 1:58.42.

Several swimmers improved on their season bests, including double-gold winners Chase Colt of Sam Houston and Allie Winters of Sulphur.

Colt dropped more than 21/2 seconds off his 200-yard freestyle time and touched the wall in 1:56.41 seconds, beating the rest of the field by more than 3 seconds. In the 100 butterfly, Colt cut more than a second to win with a sub-1-minute time at 59.19 seconds with a more than 5-second edge on the field.

Winters knocked nearly a third of a second off her 50 free to win in 29.56 seconds and almost 3 seconds in the 100 backstroke (1:11.97). She also helped Sulphur win the 400 freestyle relay (4:30.65) and second in the 200 medley relay (2:16.42), both season bests for the Tors.
