Barbe sweeps swim meet, Rossowskis combine to be part of six first places

SULPHUR — Barbe kept its tight grip on the Calcasieu Parish swimming championships Thursday with its eighth consecutive sweep of the team titles.
“We’ve just been working so hard since mid-August,” Barbe head coach Alison Gary said. “We have a fairly short season, so we try to whip all these guys and girls up into shape in a couple of months and see their times drop.
“It’s great to win in swimming. It’s great to have a team that can go out there and win and beat other teams together as a team.”
The Barbe won 10 of 11 events to cruise to the girls team title with 191 points, while Sulphur was runner-up at 105. The Bucs were led by Louisa Rossowski, the reigning district 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle champion. Rossowski edged Sam Houston’s Keira Berryhill for the girls’ high-point title by one point, 136-135. She won the 200 (2:13.77) and 500 freestyle (5:40.71) and led the Bucs to wins in the 200 and 400 freestyle relay.
“Louisa is good at everything, and it’s because she’s extremely disciplined,” Gary said. “She doesn’t miss a day of practice. She doesn’t miss a lap of practice. She doesn’t get out for a water break during practice. She shows up and does every single thing her coach tells her to do at every single practice. And that’s really hard to do because the practices can really be brutal.
“She’s just truly everything you could want in a swimmer.”
Gary said Rossowski and Abigail Broussard could be in the top eight at the state meet. Broussard won the 100 breaststroke (1:14.35), her best event, was second in the 100 butterfly, and swam on the top 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams.
“She’s looking good,” Gary said of Broussard. “I would love to see her in the top eight, and I wouldn’t be shocked if she made it to that final heat. And I think Louisa too, especially in her 500 free.”
Anna Istre (200 IM, 100 butterfly) and Julia Bradley (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke) won two individual events for the Bucs.
Louisa’s brother, Julius Rossowski, paced Barbe on the boys side. He won the 200 IM (2:13.77) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.19). Barbe finished with 123 points, while runner-up Sam Houston had 91.
The Bucs look to continue to improve their times as they build up to go after their 14th consecutive district championship on Nov. 7 at Earl J. Chris Pool in Lafayette. The state championships will follow two weeks later, Nov. 20-23, in Sulphur.
“The biggest thing for me is that we had a lot of personal bests, and that’s what I’m looking for as a coach,” Gary said. “I want to see the kids getting better, getting personal bests as often as possible. I love seeing the personal bests.
“A lot of our kids are performing the fastest that they’ve ever swum, so that’s what I like to see. It’s just really a result of hard work every single day at practice. You can say you want to make a state cut. It’s easy to say you want that. The hard work is showing up and putting in two hours a day of really, really hard practice.”
Westlake junior Talen Garrard, a Division III double medalist at the state swim meet last year, was the boys’ high-point swimmer, winning gold in the 50 (22.96) and 100 freestyle (50.15).
