A handful of Southwest Louisiana dual-threat quarterbacks led their teams to big wins in Week 6 of the high school football season.

Hamilton Christian sophomore Javon Vital accounted for four or more touchdowns for the third time in six games to lead the Warriors to a 41-21 win over Grand Lake on Friday at Cougar Stadium.

Vital ran for a season-high 248 yards on 19 carries, scoring on runs of 9, 45 and 45 yards. Through the air, he was 9 of 13 for 97 yards and two touchdowns.

Vital is one of two quarterbacks in the area who average more than 100 rushing (129) and passing yards (115.4) per game.

The other is South Beauregard senior Christian Wold (107.5 rushing ypg/134.8 passing ypg), who guided the Golden Knights to a dominating 48-26 win Thursday at Kinder.

Wold ran for 145 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries and completed 9 of 10 passes for 170 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown to Cy Barrow in the fourth quarter.

Welsh’s Jonovan Begnaud and Jennings’ Chris Ned also had big nights.

Ned and the Class 3A No. 3 Bulldogs beat Lake Charles College Prep 54-24 at home on Friday to start play in District 3-3A.

Ned showed his explosiveness, scoring on runs of 46 and 58 yards. The 46-yarder put the Bulldogs up 14-7 in the second quarter. He finished with 167 yards on 12 carries and completed 3 of 5 passes for 47 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown pass to Humphrey Ned in the second quarter.

Welsh never trailed in its 40-15 win over Loranger. Begnaud, last year’s American Press All-Southwest Louisiana Small Schools offensive MVP, averaged more than 20 yards a carry as he piled up 201 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries. He completed 3 of 4 passes for 66 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Hixon.

Streaking

Elton and LaGrange kept their win streaks alive with impressive district opening wins.

Elton is tied with Jennings’ for the area’s longest win streak at five games. The Indians once again used the one-two punch of backs Makelin Lemoine (15 carries, 175 yards, 4 TDs) and Tristan Leblanc (28-204, TD) to beat Oberlin 34-18 in District 4-1A.

LaGrange along with Iowa and Hamilton Christian have four-game win streaks. The Gators beat crosstown District 3-4A rival Washington-Marion as Dillon Green went off for 231 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries. In his last two games, Green run for 339 yards and five touchdowns.

Then there were none

The area’s last undefeated team lost on Thursday as Erath beat DeQuincy 30-28.

The Bobcats knocked off previously unbeaten Westlake 21-20 in Week 5.

Erath went ahead on a 28-yard field goal by Eli Felipe with 1:29 left in the game.

Wyatt LaVergne’s third rushing touchdown and Kohen Cormier’s point-after kick gave DeQuincy a 28-27 lead with 9:43 left in the third quarter.

Stopping a Ford

The Iowa Yellow Jackets figured out what few teams have, how to contain Leesville’s Xavier Ford. Iowa won its first 3-4A game 62-28.

Ford entered averaging 290 yards a game but was held to a season-low 93 yards on 21 carries.

Iowa rang up 553 yards of total offense, including 390 on the ground led by a pair of 100-yard backs in Jonathan Walker Jr. (102 yds., 2 TDs) and J’vien Adams (182 yds., 2 TDs).

After falling behind 6-0, Iowa scored 28 consecutive points.

Tough luck

Two weeks after winning an overtime game over Delcambre 42-34, the Vinton Lions ended up on the wrong end of an overtime game, losing 20-14 to Westminster Christian of Lafayette.

The Lions got the ball first in overtime but were stopped at the 1-yard line on fourth-and-goal. Westminster scored on a 10-yard pass on its second overtime play.

The score was tied 14-14 at halftime, and the Lions had a touchdown overturned on a holding penalty in the third quarter.

Vinton running back Jaidon Brings had his fifth 100-yard game with 168 yards on 26 carries.
