IOWA — The Iowa Yellow Jackets did what no team has really been able to do in three seasons, contain Leesville’s powerful running back Xavier Ford on Friday at Jesse E. Cady Stadiu.
In its debut in District 3-4A, Iowa held Ford under 100 yards and set season-highs on the offensive side to win 62-28.
Ford was coming off his third 300-plus yard game, but against the Yellow Jackets (5-1, 1-0) he managed only 93 yards on 21 carries. He scored on a 12-yard run on Leesville’s first possession for a 6-0. He scored again late in the second quarter on a 31-yard pass from Trel Broom but didn’t find the end zone again
“Credit to Coach (Matt) Dufresne and the defensive staff for a great plan,” Iowa head coach Tommy Johns said. “And even more importantly, our kids are going out and executing and just playing with a passion tonight that I haven’t seen here in a while. They wanted it. We knew it was going to be a big challenge, but they stepped up to it. I’m extremely proud of them.”
Iowa forced Leesville (4-2, 0-1) to turn the ball over on downs three times in the first half and each instance led to an Iowa score.
After falling behind 6-0, Iowa reeled off 35 consecutive points and had 287 total yards by halftime.
Iowa finished with a season-high 390 rushing yards, 553 total yards of offense and points (62).
“Credit to Coach Cook and the offensive staff,” Johns said. “They put together a hell of a plan.
“We moved the ball, I thought, pretty efficient tonight. We’re going to have to make some big plays, and we did. We had some explosive plays. But I’m just super proud of our team, man, and our coaches. I mean, what a win for us.”
Iowa had four players with two touchdowns each and a pair of 100-yard backs. J’vien Adams ran for 182 yards and two touchdowns, including a crushing 80-yarder in the fourth quarter, on 18 carries. Jonathan Walker Jr. scored twice while running for 102 yards on 17 carries, plus six catches for 96 yards. Bushnell scored on receptions of 54 and 27 yards and finished with three catches for 97 yards and 17 rushing yards. Cohen Charles scored on runs of 11 and 9 yards in the first half and finished with 40 yards on 10 carries.
Bushnell’s first trip to the end zone, a 54-yard reception from Reed Dupre, and Lucas Dunn’s point-after kick gave Iowa the lead, 7-6, three minutes into the game.
Ford moved into a tie with former Wampus Cat great Cecil Collins for the school career rushing touchdown record (93).
Leesville quarterback Broom threw for a season-high 248 yards (15-26-1) and three touchdowns.
