SULPHUR — Playing in their eighth game since the start of October, Sam Houston got off to a sluggish start in their non-district match against Sulphur Tuesday evening.
The Tors (17-10), the No. 10 team in Division I, led the Division II No. 2 Broncos 6-2 early in the first set. Then junior outside hitter Aubrey Portie gave the Broncos the spark they needed to sweep the Tors 25-10, 25-10, 25-11.
She had back-to-back kills to start an 8-0 run and finished with a triple-double with 10 kills, 14 aces and 11 digs.
Portie closed the first set with four consecutive aces, then opened the second set with two more.
“I was feeling really good, really excited, I was ready to play again today,” Portie said. “We haven’t played since this past weekend, and this weekend we came off really good.
“I think it was just us getting in the groove to things, warming up to the different gym and everything. I think it was just I had a good day, but I just went back there and was gonna serve the ball hard every time that I got the ball.”
Sam Houston (23-4) won for the 10th time in 11 matches.
“We’re playing six to seven matches a week and remaining healthy,” Sam Houston head coach Rene Fontenot said. “The kids’ chemistry is great, so we’re in a really good place mentally and physically.
We just have to continue to win to stay. We want to remain as two or three (seed).”
Sam Houston had 18 aces as a team.
“We work on that every day,” Fontenot said. “It’s like we work on serve-receive, and serving every day. But we didn’t do anything different than what we have to do.”
Portie is one half of the Broncos’ big front-court tandem along with junior Ava Henry. The middle hitter went off for seven of her 12 kills in the second set as the Broncos sprinted to a 10-0 lead. Henry also had 12 digs to finish with a double-double.
Sulphur opened the third set with a 3-1 lead after a pair of kills by Kendall Judge. Henry blocked a Sulphur attack and Portie’s kill tied the set at 3-3 as part of a 6-0 run.
