Last-minute thrillers highlight Week 4

Week 4 of the high school football season produced several down-to-the-wire games as four area schools scored game-winners in the fourth quarter or overtime.

Vinton (3-1) trailed Delcambre (2-2) by 14 points at the start of the fourth quarter on Friday before junior running back Jaidon Briggs took over. He scored on an 8-yard run and an 87-yard pass from Jerryckson Gonzalez to force overtime and scored the winner on a 2-yard run. Briggs finished with 172 rushing and receiving yards on 19 touches.

On Thursday, Lake Arthur (3-1) trailed Oakdale (1-3) by seven at halftime. Xavier Drake saved the day with an 80-yard scoring strike from Cameron Bonin with 1:48 left in the game for a 26-20 win. Drake also scored on a 77-yard reception in the first quarter, and Bonin completed 7 of 16 passes for 198 yards.

Hamilton Christian (3-1) got into a shootout at St. John Thursday in Plaquemine and its defense was the difference maker. Noah Menard scored on a 47-yard scoop-and-score with 2:45 to seal the win.

Quarterback Javon Vital accounted for four touchdowns, three rushing and two passing plus 278 total yards.

In Kinder on Friday, John Roberts scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 7-yard run with 11:36 left in the game to life the Yellow Jackets to a 22-16 win over Eunice. Logan Leboeuf ran for 203 yards on 21 carries.

Barbe also had a close call. It held on to beat Carencro 21-13 after taking a 14-point lead into halftime. Quarterback Jelandon Gray completed 13 of 23 passes for 171 yards, threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Luke Leger in the first quarter and scored on a 7-yard run in the second quarter.

First win

Lake Charles College Prep (1-3) avoided its first 0-4 start since its inaugural season in 2015 with a 55-34 win at home over Mansfield (1-3).

Alijah Pete moved from wide receiver to quarterback Friday and ran for 184 and three touchdowns on 12 carries and completed 8 of 12 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. Ayden Carter scored three times while running for 138 yards on nine carries and caught seven passes for 88 yards.

Still perfect

The quest for perfection in Southwest Louisiana rests on two teams.

Both rolled to big wins as Westlake beat DeRidder 42-28 and DeQuincy beat Lakeview 56-0.

DeQuincy’s Lindsey Joyce scored on a fumble return for a second consecutive game, and Carson Rainwater threw three touchdown passes for the second time this season. Sophomore Ty LaVergne added a 66-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.

Westlake Ryan Allen, Braylon Garrick and Kevin Rideau combined for 365 rushing and receiving yards and five touchdowns. Allen scored on a 42 run and 41 pass, Garrick added a 12-yard touchdown run and Rideau scored on receptions of 50 and 25 yards.

Big performances

Leesville senior Xavier Ford topped 275 yards for the third time this season after running for 278 and two scores on 35 carries in a 41-13 win over Pineville on Friday.

He is over 1,000 yards (1,087) for a third consecutive season and has scored 18 touchdowns.

Oberlin senior quarterback Seth Lyons completed 10 of 10 passes for a career-high 319 yards to lead the Tigers to a 56-28 win at home over East Beauregard. Lyons’ top target was Jayden Bokemeyer, who made four catches for 192 yards and three touchdowns.

Elton’s Makeylin Lemoine ran for 233 yards in a 54-0 over Gueydan, scoring on runs of 11, 22, 56, 22 and a 50-yard interception return.

Sam Houston’s Drew Dronet scored on an 85-yard punt return and a 34-yard reception in the Broncos’ 46-7 District 3-5A-opening win over Sulphur on Friday. He finished with 187 all-purpose yards.
