Most people have heard the quote, “Reading can take you places you have never been before.” Now, Calcasieu Parish Library cardholders can use their cards to get a free pass to any Louisiana State Park or Historic Site.

“You better come in early on Friday, Oct. 18, when the program launches,” said Christy Comeaux, Calcasieu Parish Public Library spokesperson. “There is a limited supply, and it’s a one-time-use pass to be presented to the park or historic site.

Calcasieu is one of 18 parishes participating in the pilot program that is a partnership between the State Library of Louisiana and Louisiana State Parks.

“Louisiana is blessed with so much natural beauty and this program is a great way to explore it all,” Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser said. “We also have great public libraries around the state, and this is another reason for people to visit them. It’s a win-win.”

The Check Out Louisiana State Parks program includes Geaux Explore backpacks that contain binoculars, a compass, a magnifying glass, Leave No Trace outdoor ethics cards, and guides to Louisiana birds, wildlife and trees and flowers.
