10 properties slated for condemnation hearing

The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury announced changes in the status of adjudicated properties this week.

Ten property owners will be notified to tell why their properties should not be condemned at the Nov. 7 CPPJ meeting, and one property owner will get a 100 percent buyout of his “repetitive loss” property for its appraised value of $103,000 with funding received from the FEMA Flood Mitigation Assistance program. Earlier this year, a home was “bought out” on Moss Lake for $940,000.

These are the addresses slated for the Nov. 7 condemnation hearing: 512 Pine Cone Dr., Moss Bluff; 2428 Dolphin Dr., Lake Charles; 2803 Addison Loop, Lake Charles; 1071 Hwy. 27, DeQuincy; 505 Corley St., DeQuincy; 3550 Carlyss Drive, Lot 142, Carlyss; 1528 Eunice St., Sulphur; South of 2517 Straley St., Westlake; 2517 Straley St., Westlake; and 1009 South Perkins Ferry Rd., Moss Bluff.

Before the meeting, the CCPJ Budget Committee met and approved requests for the following grants from the Gaming Fund:

  • Ward Two Fire Protection District No. One will receive $6,000 for an air-conditioner for the Hayes Fire Station.
  • Waterworks District No. Eleven of Wards Four and Seven will purchase new billing software with $16,000.
  • Ward Six Fire Protection No. One will receive $30 for the purchase of a new crew cab truck.
  • Waterworks District No. Two in Ward Six will receive $36,735 to replace a waterline along Mister Roberts Road to Hargrove Loop in DeQuincy.

     The CPPJ approved the request for $45,000 for the Community Center and Playground District No. Two of Ward Four (SPAR) for costs associated with the LHSAA 2024 State Baseball and Softball Championships held April and May.

Mallard Junction Community Center and Playground

Police Juror Tony Guillory asked for an update on Mallard Junction and thanked the other jurors for their support. Facility management director Dean Kelly gave the update.

He said the safety challenges of the location include just one way in and out. Ditches are deep on each side. Drainage will be addressed. A rentable pavilion will be built that is similar to the one at White Oak Park. Picnic gazebos will be added and playground equipment will be fully accessible.

Brossett Architect was selected as the architectural firm and approved.

Property status change

Bidders who are awarded adjudicated properties have to fill necessary requirements. When they don’t, properties are re-advertised. That’s what’s going on with these four addresses: 6100 Block of Corbina Road in Ward Three, Lake Charles; 1807 11th St. in Ward Three, Lake Charles; 812 N. Irwin St. in Ward Four, Sulphur; 410 Willet Lane in Ward Four, Westlake; and 5800 Block of Southern Avenue in Ward Seven, Vinton.

Property east of the 500 Block of East Street in Ward Seven was redeemed.
