The Salvation Army is preparing for another demanding season of need with just 100 days until Christmas. While the economy has improved slightly, thousands of area residents face challenges during the holidays as high prices for food and housing continue.

“We have found that we are receiving more requests for assistance than ever before,” Major Michael Knott of the Salvation Army in Lake Charles said. “Many people are still struggling to make ends meet.”

The Salvation Army of Lake Charles anticipates requests for services to increase this holiday season over previous years.

Last year, the organization provided over 1,128 Christmas gifts to area children, served 500 family/individual cases, and supplied food pantry and utility assistance to many struggling families. With the reopening of an emergency housing shelter in May, those numbers are likely to rise.

“With the public’s generosity, The Salvation Army will continue to provide help and hope to our neighbors in need,” Major Knott said. “We are grateful for how the residents of Lake Charles support us, but we need help now more than ever.”

To offer more convenient giving options, The Salvation Army allows donors to support their neighbors through giving in various ways.

“Every donation stays right here in Lake Charles and the surrounding area to support the local programs and services we offer,” Major Knott said. “When you give, you are strengthening our communities by helping your neighbors right where you live.”
